Nestled high on the slopes of Mount Neion, 340 meters above sea level, lies the picturesque village of Exogi. Its name, meaning “Out Land,” aptly describes its location amidst fertile, terraced vineyards that cascade down the mountainside. Just 2 kilometers from Platrithias and 20 kilometers from Vathy, Exogi offers a unique blend of historical charm and panoramic beauty.
A Rich Past:
Exogi's strategic position made it a prominent settlement during the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Venetian period. Offering refuge from pirates and boasting stunning views of the surrounding sea and bays, the village thrived. Following the decline of piracy in the 16th century, some residents moved closer to the coast, forming the villages of Stavros and Platrithias.
A Tranquil Retreat:
Despite its bustling past, Exogi now offers a tranquil escape. With a population of only 50 residents, the village exudes a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the traditional cafe-restaurant, admire the historic Church of Agia Marina, and marvel at the ancient Byzantine ruins and artifacts unearthed near Platrithias.
Unforgettable Panoramas:
A highlight of Exogi is the breathtaking view. A dirt road leads to the top of the mountain, culminating at the abandoned Panaghia Monastery. From this vantage point, visitors are rewarded with a panoramic vista encompassing northern Ithaca, the surrounding islands, and the mainland coast of Greece.
