High in the embrace of Perachori’s mountains, nestled amidst the enchanting “Afentikos Loggos” (a small but beautiful oak forest), lies the captivating church of Agia Paraskevi. This mountaintop sanctuary beckons pilgrims and nature enthusiasts alike, offering a haven of serenity and breathtaking panoramas.
The exact year of its construction remains a charming mystery. However, local lore whispers tales of Saint Papoulakis, an ascetic who frequented these woods and likely found solace in the chapel around 1800. This intriguing connection hints at the church’s long history, a place of spiritual refuge for generations.
Though tragically damaged by the 1953 earthquakes, Agia Paraskevi rose again, its spirit unbroken. Today, it stands proudly as part of the parish church Assumption of Perachori. Every year, on July 26th, the feast day of Agia Paraskevi, the island comes alive with a vibrant celebration. Pilgrims embark on a dedicated march, traversing the steep path leading to the church. The air hums with devotion as they arrive, lighting candles and offering prayers within the chapel’s walls.
But Agia Paraskevi offers more than just religious significance. The surrounding forest provides a tranquil escape, inviting visitors to explore its verdant beauty. Imagine the serenity of a quiet moment beneath the shade of ancient oak trees, the gentle breeze carrying whispers of history and faith.
