North of the town of Vathy lies the enchanting Cave of the Nymphs, also known as Marmarospilia. This cave sanctuary, steeped in myth and legend, is dedicated to the Nymphs and holds a special place in both ancient lore and the hearts of visitors.

Although currently closed to the public, the Cave of the Nymphs remains a site of great historical and cultural significance. According to Anna Petrocheilou’s book, “The Caves of Greece,” tradition suggests that this is the very cave referenced in Homer’s epic. It is believed that Nymphs, specifically the Naiads, were worshipped here, and that Odysseus himself hid the treasures given to him by the Phaeacians in this very cave on his journey back to Ithaca.

The cave is characterized by its two distinct entrances, one said to be for the gods and the other for mortals. Within the cave, visitors can marvel at the natural beauty of stalagmites and the remnants of an ancient altar, adding to the mystical atmosphere of this storied site.
