Deep within the embrace of Perachori, nestled in the area known as Paleochora, lies the captivating Church of the Assumption. This sanctuary, also known as Panagia Paleochora or Palia Panagia, isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a captivating fragment of Byzantine history.
Though the exact date of its construction remains a beguiling mystery, the church undoubtedly boasts a long and storied past. It faithfully served the community for centuries, its walls echoing with prayers and hymns, until the devastating earthquake of 1953 struck. While the earthquake inflicted severe damage, the spirit of the church couldn’t be daunted.
One captivating legacy remains within the church’s walls – breathtaking Byzantine frescoes. These vibrant works of art, whispering tales of a bygone era, offer a glimpse into the artistic heritage of the island. They stand as a testament to the enduring power of faith and artistic expression.
Another twist in the story unfolds with the 17th-century wooden temple that once belonged to the Church of the Assumption. Though tragically destroyed by the 1953 earthquake, its legacy lives on. The salvaged parts were carefully relocated and now grace the Church of Saint Raphael in Perachori, ensuring a piece of the Assumption’s history finds new life.
