Elpinor, a prominent social organization in Ithaca, was established in 2011 through the merger of the open protection centre for the elderly (KAPI) and the local pre-school group. Under the auspices of the local municipality, Elpinor aims to support 322 elderly and vulnerable individuals, ensuring their active participation in family and community life.
Elpinor provides an array of essential services to its members and their immediate families, including medical tests by specialist doctors for illness prevention and comprehensive social support. The organization also arranges a rich program of social and cultural events, fitness classes, and lifelong learning opportunities, fostering a vibrant community spirit.
One of Elpinor’s standout initiatives is the “Home Help” scheme, launched in 2013. This program assists housebound elderly individuals, those unable to care for themselves, and people with special needs. It offers voluntary assistance, hospital care, and support for family caregivers, playing a critical role in enhancing the quality of life for many residents.
Managed by a seven-member governing body appointed by the town council, Elpinor operates with financial support from municipal grants, member subscriptions, gifts, and generous bequests. Through its dedicated efforts, Elpinor continues to be a cornerstone of social care and community engagement in Ithaca.
