The Association of Friends of Artistic Education of Ithaca, known as “En Choro,” is a vibrant non-profit society established in October 2009 under the auspices of the Ithacan municipality. This organization aims to develop and disseminate the arts of dance, music, and painting, while promoting the broader cultural heritage of Ithaca.
“En Choro” is dedicated to organizing a range of cultural activities, including dance, music, and other artistic events. It is mandated to form an island dance ensemble and to stage at least one major dance, choral, or musical performance annually. The society also fosters collaboration with other local clubs and societies to enrich Ithaca’s cultural landscape.
Since its inception, “En Choro” has offered weekly dance classes focusing on modern dance and hip-hop, along with a structured program for children and youths that includes movement classes and individual instrument lessons taught by professional instructors. Currently, over 40 children and young people participate in these classes, and the society boasts over 60 active members. Since 2010, the society has expanded its offerings to include Latin dance classes for adults, with more than 30 participants benefiting from these lessons each year.
A highlight of the society’s calendar is the annual musical theatre production held in July, inviting all members to participate and showcasing the diverse talents within the community. Additionally, “En Choro” plays a pivotal role in organizing Ithaca’s Christmas celebrations and has successfully hosted two Choral Festivals featuring renowned international choirs. The society’s collaborative spirit ensures that it works closely with similar groups on the island to support Ithaca’s cultural and philanthropic initiatives.
Looking ahead, “En Choro” is passionately working towards establishing an annual summer dance festival in Ithaca, a goal that underscores its commitment to enriching the island’s artistic and cultural offerings.
