Located on the right side of the port in the quaint village of Kioni, Ithaca, stands a humble reminder of a hero’s sojourn – the House of Karaiskaki. This stone dwelling, though weathered by time, holds within its walls echoes of a storied past, where the legendary hero Georgios Karaiskakis once sought refuge during the tumultuous years preceding the Greek Revolution of 1821.

In 1823, Karaiskakis, stricken with tuberculosis, sought respite from the rugged terrain of Agrafa and sought solace and treatment on the tranquil shores of Ithaca. Though the island offered little hope for his recovery, the hero’s resilience and determination remained unwavering. Nostalgic for his homeland, he eventually returned to Mesolongi, but not without leaving a mark on the idyllic landscape of Kioni.

Today, only remnants of Karaiskakis’ temporary abode remain, with the exterior walls and doorways serving as silent witnesses to his brief sojourn on the island. Yet, despite the passage of time, the House of Karaiskaki stands as a poignant reminder of the hero’s enduring spirit and unwavering dedication to the cause of Greek independence.

As visitors pass by this humble dwelling, they are invited to reflect on the sacrifices made by Karaiskakis and countless others in the pursuit of freedom and justice. For in the quiet corners of Kioni, the echoes of the past still resonate, carrying with them the indomitable spirit of a hero who once sought refuge amidst its ancient stones.
