The Virgin Mary holds a special place in the hearts of Ithacans, and two charming chapels named Panagoula (“Little Virgin Mary”) beautifully illustrate this devotion.

Dexa’s Panagoula:

Nestled above the public road in Dexa, a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, affectionately called Panagoula by the faithful, whispers tales of enduring faith. Built roughly 300 years ago, it served as a sanctuary for those who couldn’t make the pilgrimage to the renowned Kathara Monastery on the island’s birthday of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on September 8th.

This heartwarming tradition highlights the significance of Panagoula as a local haven for worshippers seeking to honor the Virgin Mary. However, the passage of time and the harsh impact of earthquakes have taken their toll, leaving the chapel in need of significant repair.

Vathy’s Panagoula:

Another Panagoula graces the Vathy area, located near Agia Paraskevi. This chapel pulsates with life on the eve of the Ascension, the last day referred to as the “Risen Christ.” A divine liturgy fills the air, drawing the community together to celebrate this important religious occasion.

A Shared Legacy:

Though separated by distance, both Panagoulas embody the deep-rooted faith of the Ithacan people. They stand as testaments to the enduring love for the Virgin Mary and the importance of local sanctuaries in fostering a sense of community and shared traditions.
