The ancient pathway that once connected Exogi with the Platrithias Valley and the Frikes Port begins near the bridge in the village. Facing away from the bridge, start ascending the track to the left of the restaurant “Yefyri”. At the fork, follow the left track marked with red paint.
This cobbled street leads to the Homeric site “Μελάνυθρος” (Melanithros), home to the namesake fountain mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey (υ 158: “αι μεν είκοσι βήσαν επί κρήνην μελάνυδρον”) and the small church of Panaghia. Continue along the track until you reach a dirt road. Cross the road, and on your right-hand side, you will find the archaeological site known as “Homer School – Aghios Athanasios”.
Excavations at this site uncovered a fortified complex of buildings dating from the Mycenaean to the Hellenistic period (12th-1st centuries BC). Continue on the track all the way to Exogi, until you reach a fork with three streets.
