Nestled in the heart of Stavros village, perched atop the island’s northern reaches, stands the Transfiguration of Savior Church – a sanctuary that embodies the spirit of faith, community, and cultural heritage. Built between 1923 and 1929 by refugees seeking a new home, this cruciform church with a dome stands as a unique architectural gem amidst Ithaca’s predominantly basilica-style temples.

The Transfiguration of Savior Church holds a special place in the hearts of Ithacans, not only for its architectural beauty but also for its deep connection to the island’s history. The story of its construction is interwoven with the tale of refugees seeking solace and a new beginning. Saint Joachim Papoulakis, a revered figure on Ithaca, played a pivotal role in this endeavor, prophetically declaring that a church would be built in the village by refugees and served by a refugee priest – a prophecy that came to fruition.

Stepping into the Transfiguration of Savior Church, visitors are enveloped in an atmosphere of serenity and devotion. The church’s simple yet elegant interior provides a tranquil space for reflection and prayer. The presence of the Relics of Saint Joachim, brought to the church annually on May 23rd from the nearby Church of Saint Barbara, adds a layer of spiritual significance for pilgrims and visitors alike.

The Transfiguration of Savior Church serves as the heart of Stavros’ vibrant religious and cultural life. Each year, on August 5th and 6th, the village comes alive with two of the island’s grandest festivals, honoring the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. These festivities are a testament to the enduring faith and traditions that bind the Ithacan community together.
