High on the saddle between Mπροστα (Prosta) and Piso Aetos, overlooking the breathtaking Ionian landscape, stands the chapel of St. George the Great Martyr. This place of worship embodies a rich history, whispering tales of faith passed down through generations.

The current structure, built roughly 20 years ago, rests upon a foundation steeped in time. Its predecessor, constructed after the devastating 1953 earthquake, echoes the resilience of the Ithacan spirit. But the roots of this sacred space run even deeper. Vague whispers speak of an even older stone-built church, its exact origins a captivating mystery.

The present chapel, with its traditional wooden roof tiles, fosters a sense of serenity. Inside, discover four precious icons created in the renowned Mount Athos (Agio Oros) just a few years ago. These vibrant works of art add a touch of beauty and spiritual significance to the space.

Each year, on November 3rd, the chapel comes alive with the celebration of the Translation of the Relics of St. George. This vibrant festival draws devotees from across the island, solidifying the chapel’s role as a cherished landmark in the hearts of the Ithacan community.
