Tucked away in Piso Aetos, just before the captivating archaeological site of the ancient city of Alalkomenes, lies a unique treasure – the chapel of Saint Theodore the Sanctified. Dedicated to a lesser-known saint, a student of Saint Pachomios, this charming chapel holds a special place in Ithaca’s religious landscape.
Believed to be one of only two churches dedicated to this particular Saint in all of Greece (the other residing in Crete), Saint Theodore the Sanctified exudes a sense of intrigue and rarity. Built roughly 150 years ago and belonging to the parish church of Assumption (Gardelaki), it has weathered the test of time, including a devastating earthquake in 1953. Rebuilt with unwavering faith, the chapel stands as a testament to the community’s dedication.
Step inside and discover a space imbued with history. The venerated icon dates back to 1899, as proudly indicated on its surface. Every year on May 16th, the memory of Saint Theodore is honored with a special liturgy, a vibrant celebration that brings the community together.
